Bump Baby & Beyond: Baby Biz Feature | Halifax Baby Photographer

Over the course of the last two years I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting many other local business folk specializing in all things baby related. Nicole MacHattie of Bump Baby & Beyond was one of the very first, and has always been incredibly supportive of not just my business, but other local entrepreneurs as well.

As the owner of Bedford’s Premier Baby Boutique, it seemed only fitting that she were the first featured “Baby Biz” here on the blog!

Why did you decide to open a “baby” business?

With my past experience of owning a child care business, managing a 10 million dollar inventory Gap store, and being a pharamaceutical sales representative, I was well versed in the retail, sales, and small business language.

My first thought of opening a maternity boutique came when I grew out of my pre-pregnancy clothes during my first pregnancy with my son Ewan. Surprisingly, Ewan was nine months old when I found out I was pregnant again with my daughter Emma Louise! After having two children in less than two years I learned quickly how difficult it was to find hip and trendy maternity fashions for professional women.

I started looking into what it would cost to open a maternity boutique in my community of Bedford so I could be close to my husband and beautiful children while following my passion of becoming a mompreneur. During my research there became a natural progression from opening an exclusively maternity boutique to baby fashions and equipment “all under one roof”.

The name “BUMP BABY & BEYOND” was a perfect fit as it allowed us the freedom to expand beyond retailing maternity and baby items into parent and baby services and beyond!

What is your most popular product or service, and what do your clients love about it?

One of our most popular maternity fashions would be our convertable denims. Not only are they locally designed here in Bedford but they are a premium quality with an affordable price point and the best feature is that moms can wear them during and after baby with an extension tab and removable band.

Our most popular service would be our classes we offer upstairs. Not only do we have prenatal and post natal yoga classes but we also offer free breastfeeding support groups, kindermusik classes, parent and baby massage classes, stroller fit classes, mom & baby fitness classes, and much more. It’s a great way to educate parents as well as keep them in shape while they build relationships with other parents in their classes and workshops.

What makes your business unique?

What makes BUMP BABY & BEYOND unique is that we are a “One Stop Mom Shop!”

Not only do we provide high quality retail products for moms-to-be, dads, and their babies but we are the only business in HRM specializing in maternity massage therapy, maternity and baby photography, fitness, and educational classes all under one roof!

The future plans of BUMP BABY & BEYOND Inc. is to add maternity specialists in the Chiropractic, Osteopathic, an Accupuncture fields. This maternity wellness team will provide our moms-to-be and new parents the convenience of meeting with their specialists at the same convenient location as their favorite baby boutique!

Is there anything about Bump Baby & Beyond that you wish was more commonly known?

We pride ourselves in being a community-minded business!

The majority of our marketing and advertising has been and always will be through community sponsorship programs, donations, and fundraisers.

We are also consistently searching for locally made products so if there are any small business owners who create their own products or teach classes related to our business, we would love to meet them or call anytime.

Also, if you would like to join our team of professionals please call us to make an appointment to discuss our future plans.

If you’ve been to Bump Baby & Beyond, or have always wanted to pop in for a visit…..don’t be shy, leave a comment here on the blog telling us what you loved about it or what you’d love to purchase from them, and one lucky reader will win a $25 gift certificate, courtesy of Tanya Shields Photography!
Thanks again Nicole!

Atlantic Family Expo 2010 | Tanya Shields Photography

I’ve never participated in an event like this before, and I’m quite looking forward to it!

I’ll be there all weekend, with some really great “show specials” so if you’ve been thinking of booking a session, this will be the time to do it!

I’ll be announcing the show specials here on the blog as we get closer the dates, so keep an eye out!

What is the Atlantic Family Expo you ask? Well, who better to explain than the organizers themselves?

We Love Our Children-Atlantic Canada’s Family Expo is a two day expo which will give parents, grandparents, guardians access to experts on various subjects dealing with raising children. Families will be exposed to the latest in child safety, the scoop on the “how to’s” and the “whys”, family travel, the best activities to fill their lives and advice on how to plan for their future. There will be a play area, a teaching area, a speaker series, keynote, workshops and a marketplace to purchase items and services on-site. There will be contests, lots of FREE samples and giveaways, demonstrations and entertainment all weekend long.”

Head of the Class | Nova Scotia High School Senior Photographer

Class of 1993.

It’s been 17 years since I graduated from Bridgetown Regional High School, and more than 10 since I set foot inside the doors.

Until yesterday.

It smells the same. It looks the same. Some of the teachers are the same. My dorky photo is still on the wall.

I instantly reverted to the age of 17, and was positive I would  get in trouble for “roaming the halls”.

I made the trip down to give a presentation to the Grade 11 and 12 students on “Senior Portraits” and drug invited Liam Hennessey along for the ride. (Good thing too, cuz you never know when an expert stick man drawing is needed!)

We spoke to a small, but interested, group about everything from composition and exposure to our photography backgrounds.

And then…….then it was time to do what we do. The cameras came out, and the good times rolled.

Thanks to “the girls” for being so willing…you were the highlight of our day….thank you for not calling me Ms. Shields….and thank you for not rolling your eyes when I called you “kids” !

Big thanks to Lori Whitman-Price (Art teacher and friend extraordinare,  so obviously loved by all her kids), staff and students, all of whom were so welcoming.

GO TROJANS!

Sneak Peek: Janusas Family {Halifax Family Photographer}

Little boys hold a special place in my heart….I have 3 of my own and it’s been a long time since they were this small!

Little Ethan was my music man. Boppin’ to classical while chompin’ on cheese and Cheerios…..what more could a person ask for?! He was a delightful little guy, and thankfully Mom and Dad didnt mind me rearranging their living room!

I’ve come to realize that it’s a good thing the camera is never pointed in my direction during these sessions, as I tend to turn into a total clown by the end….giving all new meaning to the phrase “Dance Monkey Dance!!!” ♥

Hope you like your sneak peek!
