Double Trouble | Halifax Newborn Baby Photographer

I love photographing newborns…and what better than twins?

I won’t even pretend it wasn’t….with 9 week old twin boys, this session was tricky. Matthew and David were angels, but as often the case when photographing twins, not at the same time! I’m quite pleased with the results though, and here is a quick peek for their Mama, Daddy and big sisters Lucy and Grace (also twins!)

Organic Southend Childcare: Baby Biz Feature | Halifax Child and Family Photographer

I have met SO many wonderful people in the last several years via photography, and more recently through networking and the Baby Biz Features! Misty Cartmill is one of them, and I had the pleasure of being invited to attend her 1st Annual Organic Southend Childcare holiday party yesterday. It was immediately evident how much the children loved being there, and how much Misty loved having them.

How long have you been in business?

Since March 2010

What is your website address?

http://www.organicsouthendchildcare.com

Why did you decide to open a “baby” business?

I am University educated, holding several degrees. I have an 8 year professional background in Medical Education and Health Care at both the University and District Hospital level. I enjoyed my work and assumed this was the correct career path for me.

That all changed when I became pregnant with my first child, a son who is currently 27 months.
I was frustrated with the lack of quality child care in my area. I could not find a child care with a small child/caregiver ratio, that served organic/local food AND was accepting of Cloth Diapers AND Breastmilk. I am proud that I provide all of these options to families in the HRM!

Therefore, I resigned from my position at Capital District Health Authority (HI Hospital), to commit to providing quality enriching child care.

What is your most popular service and what do your clients love about it?

Our Clients love our hands on family approach. We provide such a small child to caregiver ratio of 1:3 that it is easy to provide a personal family atmosphere for each child and as a whole.

We are very close with our client families and children. It isn’t uncommon for me to talk to, have playdates or attend events with client families outside of the child care hours and weekends.

Our clients love our ORGANIC menu: All meals and snacks are organic, also usually locally bought and home cooked. In the summer we have an organic garden the children tend to and pick our food from. We call it our “learning garden”.

Our clients LOVE our location! Most of our clients live and/or work near the University, Hospitals or Downtown and we are literally one street away from all three! We are also next to Point Pleasant Park.

Clients love our huge deck and large flat backyard (100ft X 40ft/4000 sqft!) a totally enclosed area.

Our clients love that we are book obsessed, we have an extensive library.

What makes your business unique?

We are unique to other child/day cares in the HRM (as I mentioned above) in the following ways:

-Our small child/caregiver ratio of 1:3

-Our ALL Organic and homemade menu. I am proud to say we have cured one client child’s chronic constipation and had another client child gain needed weight on our all natural diet. I am proud that our children eat healthy and are thriving.

-Location: Next to Dalhousie University, Hospitals and Downtown in the South End of Halifax, beside Point Pleasant Park.

-We accept Cloth Diapers and Breastmilk

We are also unique in several other ways:

-We believe in a community sleeping approach rather than yoga mats or cribs…Our children community sleep all together on antimicrobial mattresses that link together. It is a unique approach and it works! There are pictures of this on my website, and they are pretty darn cute too!

- We do not believe in TV for children during child care hours. We focus on art, literature and outside play.

-We provide personal daily feedback to parents on a “daily report” slip, which outlines what all parents want to know: How well they ate, How well they slept, bowel movements, any interesting things such as new words, actions or activities.

-All menus are posted each day in the main entrance (an a chalkboard giraffe:)

Basically, everything I wanted for my son, I provide at my child care!

Is there anything about your business that you wish was more commonly known?

I am very active in the community. I belong to/am a member of several professional organizations and committees.

I believe in, and promote local, small business and Women Owned Business.

I have many partnerships with local businesses and professionals across the HRM that offer exclusive discounts and/or events to my client families.

I do not believe in just towing the line, I am always learning, growing and trying to be better for the children.

Dawn | Halifax Maternity Photographer

I finally had the opportunity to meet Dawn today, after many emails back and forth while she was still at home in Nunavut. She and her husband have been posted North for the last five years, and are now expecting their new bundle, due just days after Christmas!
