If you’re a follower of my blog, you may remember Leanne and John’s story. Sophie Katherine managed to hang in for another 2 weeks after our maternity session, and was born on June 1st 2010, 10 weeks early and a hair shy of 2 lbs. Small but mighty, Sophie finally came home just a few short weeks ago.
As I was preparing for her “newborn” session, I asked Leanne if there were any particular props or images she was hoping for. There were a few, and I knew exactly which one she was referring to when she mentioned “the bucket”.
As I packed the car this morning, I remembered the Photographer’s Prayer, and really hoped I could deliver.
Yes, Sophie was only 8 lbs, but she was still several weeks past her actual due date, and technically almost 4 months old.
The Photographer’s Prayer
As I bring my subject into focus and prepare to make each portrait, never let me forget that I’m creating treasures for some family, a keepsake for loved ones.
Make me sensitive to the qualities and virtues of others, that I may draw out into the light the beautiful radiant belongings of their hearts.
Help me to be an artist, collecting the beauty of every soul, the glow of youth, the gentleness, the laughter or tears of each life that is precious.
Deeper than a means of livelihood, give me the perspective to see my art as a service to others, making life richer and more memorable.
And between the lights and shadows, the ups and downs and the rolling years, keep me from getting out of focus or off center, so that my life and work may be framed with dignity and colored with contentment …

After four hours of rocking, feeding, and posing, I told Leanne I would set up for the bucket, and if it happened, it happened.
With a mind of her own, Sophie had been very particular all afternoon. Leanne admitted afterwards that she thought I was “living a pipe dream”.
Oh Leanne……nothing a little patience won’t fix.
