Army, Navy & Baby | Halifax Baby Photographer

This session almost didn’t happen!

Between renovating the new studio and Daddy Ian being off shore with the Navy, it seemed as if our schedules just wouldn’t align! However, an unexpected return to port saved the day and Mr. Lachlan came for a visit this week.

I’m never quite sure how the “older” babies will handle the sessions…typically wide awake but not able to sit on their own, past that super curly sleepy stage and already developing a mind of thier own. Aside from a quite snack though, 9 week old Lachlan was the man.

A pleasure to have met you little sir. ♥

Classic Beauty | Halifax Maternity Photographer

I love newborn photography, and it is always special when I’m able to spend some time with the new parents before the impending arrival. It’s a time of such excitement and anticipation….but also a time when some women don’t feel their most glamorous.

I think it’s an all too common feeling….you’ve gained weight (in my case it was 40-65 lbs!), your favorite clothes don’t fit, and your complexion may have reverted to that of a 13 year old.

Yet, there you stand, trusting me….placing yourself in front of my camera.

When Vanessa and Don came into the studio yesterday, I immediately liked them. Vanessa quickly told me that she wasn’t particularly fond of the camera, was a rather “boring” person who felt like a giant house.

Vanessa…..

I hope you are able to see yourself in these images as I see you.

A classic beauty, who may very well not like being in front of the camera, but absolutely belongs in front of it.

I hope you see the blatant love and pride on Don’s face, that I saw, while he watched you yesterday.

I so look forward to meeting your daughter.

Sweet Dreams | Halifax Newborn Photographer

Oh Sophie girl. You are a superstar and your parents are clearly smitten with you.

Sophie arrived a couple of weeks earlier than anticipated, and last night was the only time I was able to fit her in! I was a bit nervous as newborn sessions typically run 4-5 hours…..so starting at 6pm could have been tricky! It was the first time I had shot a newborn in the evening, and if last night was any indication, I might do it more often!! ♥

Itty Bitty | Halifax Newborn & Child Photographer

If you’re a follower of my blog, you may remember Leanne and John’s story. Sophie Katherine managed to hang in for another 2 weeks after our maternity session, and was born on June 1st 2010, 10 weeks early and a hair shy of 2 lbs. Small but mighty, Sophie finally came home just a few short weeks ago.

As I was preparing for her “newborn” session, I asked Leanne if there were any particular props or images she was hoping for. There were a few, and I knew exactly which one she was referring to when she mentioned “the bucket”.

As I packed the car this morning, I remembered the Photographer’s Prayer, and really hoped I could deliver.

Yes, Sophie was only 8 lbs, but she was still several weeks past her actual due date, and technically almost 4 months old.

The Photographer’s Prayer

As I bring my subject into focus and prepare to make each portrait, never let me forget that I’m creating treasures for some family, a keepsake for loved ones.

Make me sensitive to the qualities and virtues of others, that I may draw out into the light the beautiful radiant belongings of their hearts.

Help me to be an artist, collecting the beauty of every soul, the glow of youth, the gentleness, the laughter or tears of each life that is precious.

Deeper than a means of livelihood, give me the perspective to see my art as a service to others, making life richer and more memorable.

And between the lights and shadows, the ups and downs and the rolling years, keep me from getting out of focus or off center, so that my life and work may be framed with dignity and colored with contentment …

After four hours of rocking, feeding, and posing, I told Leanne I would set up for the bucket, and if it happened, it happened.

With a mind of her own, Sophie had been very particular all afternoon. Leanne admitted afterwards that she thought I was “living a pipe dream”.

Oh Leanne……nothing a little patience won’t fix.

;)
